Tip 2. Beware of "quick fix" solutions

We are sometimes asked why we rarely mention Meta-tags. There are a lot of people out there who tout these tags as the be all and end all of doing well in the search engines. IF ONLY….Yes, it is worth getting them right as they can help. No, they won't work miracles. (Just in case you don't know, these tags are a bit of code that is read by the search engines but is not seen by the website viewer. The idea is that they are supposed to give search engines an indication of what the page is about.)

Misinformation is rife in the search engine optimisation world. So many companies claim to "know search engines" but often end up doing more harm than good. Undoing poor quality work can be very difficult. So often we see even big name web developers using a "special technique to boost search engine ratings" that has either never worked, might of worked two years ago or which simply risks you being seen as a SPAMMER (which can lead to you being black listed).

Worse than those who get it wrong through lack of knowledge are those who are out there to make a fast buck from unsuspecting website owners. There are search engines charging horrendous fees that will deliver you no more than 2 visitors between now and 2048. There are companies who will call you up promising to get you to number one on a term. In almost all cases it will make them money but it will never produce you any sales. There are also companies who will use unethical techniques that could get you black listed, which is certainly a status you don't want to achieve.
