Search Engine Optimisation Tips (Back to Introduction)
Tip 3. Get other GOOD Websites to Link to Yours
Increasingly search engines are looking at the way sites link to each other. The idea is that if somebody likes your site enough to add a link to it, then your site must be of use to somebody. In general, if there are lots of links pointing to your site, then you will not only get traffic from those links but you will also do better in the search engines.
It is worth bearing in mind that not all links are created equal. The following factors are used by at least some search engines:
- A link from a site with lots of people linking to it is worth more than a link from a site with no or few other sites linking to it.
- A link on a page with only a few links from it is worth more than a link from a page with lots of links on it.
- A link from a site that is "on topic" (i.e. its subject matter is close to the subject matter of your site) is worth more than a link from a site that is "off topic".
Getting links is also the best way of getting included in the important indexing search engines such as Google, Inktomi and Alltheweb as they will find your site automatically.
